“AURORA, Colo. —  A veteran who fatally shot a naked intruder as the man attacked his grandson in his suburban Denver home early Monday was killed by responding officers, according to investigators and news reports. Police received multiple calls about a break-in at the home at about 1:30 a.m., and when officers arrived, they heard gunshots inside, The Aurora Sentinel reported.

Aurora police, who described the scene in a statement as “very chaotic and violent,” said they encountered an armed man and fatally shot him. That man turned out to be the person who lived in the home. A second man, the suspected intruder, was found dead during a search.

A child also suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries at the hands of the intruder, but police did not release additional details, citing an ongoing investigation.

“This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved,” Police Chief Nick Metz said. “We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very difficult time.”

Investigators have not released the names of the resident or the suspected intruder. But family attorney Siddhartha Rathod identified the homeowner to CBS Denver as 73-year-old Richard “Gary” Black, a Vietnam veteran.

Black, reportedly the recipient of a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, was a retired IRS agent who neighbors call a family man.

“This is a horror movie scenario,” Rathod told the Denver Post.” There’s no question Mr. Black is a hero, that Mr. Black saved his grandson’s life. This truly is a tragedy.”

“Black, his wife, a stepson and the grandson were all asleep when the intruder kicked in the door, Rathod told the paper. The intruder grabbed the boy, choked him and then tried to drown him in a bathtub, Rathod said.

Black and his stepson tried unsuccessfully to stop the attacker, and Black then reportedly retrieved his gun and shot the intruder in the chest, killing him. At some point during the altercation, Black’s wife reportedly called dispatchers and described what was happening, saying that the intruder was naked and describing what her husband was wearing.

Rathod told the Denver Post the stepson was in the bathroom with the boy and Black’s wife was outside talking to dispatchers when they heard more gunfire. Black was standing in his living room when he was shot, and he later died at a hospital.

Many questions remain unanswered about Black’s death, Rathod said. The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative reassignment with pay, according to the Denver Post, and the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and Denver Police are investigating.

Late Tuesday night, police confirmed the officer who shot Black was involved in another deadly shooting in late June, the station reports.”

To serve: Hernando county Fl. cop fired after abandoning elderly man with catheter bag in his underwear

“SPRING HILL (FOX 13) – The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy was fired for policy violations after his interactions with a man wearing only underwear and carrying a catheter bag.

An Internal Affairs investigation report says Deputy Jeffrey Lamondra violated several policies when he and another responding deputy called a cab for a 60-year-old man in his underwear and holding a catheter drainage bag at an address in Spring Hill.

The report says Deputy Lamondra and Deputy Brian Schneider were sent to Mariner Blvd. just before midnight on February 12, after someone called about a suspicious person. The deputies found Patsy Horan, for whom they called a cab to take him to the address associated with his name in the law enforcement database.

About an hour and a half later, the cab driver called Zephyrhills police because Horan would not get out of the vehicle, the report says. The driver told police Horan refused to leave the cab because he did not live at the address. The report says officers realized Horan needed medical help and, under the Baker Act, took him to the hospital.

The sheriff’s office says Horan is now getting the care he needs at an assisted living facility in Zephyrhills.

Meanwhile, the investigation found Deputy Lamondra violated several rules related to preliminary investigations, computerized records security, and the code of conduct. Lamondra, a 10-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was terminated.

“An Internal Affairs Investigation revealed that Lamondra’s inactions during a call for service involving an elderly person are in complete conflict with the basic doctrines of public service. Deputy Lamondra brought significant embarrassment and discredit to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office,” a statement from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.”

“A former Oklahoma police officer has been found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting more than a dozen black women in a low-income neighbourhood he patrolled.

Daniel Holtzclaw, 29, was convicted of rape, sexual battery and other charges.

The trial heard that Holtzclaw preyed on 13 victims aged 17 to 57, most of them with police records, on the northeast side of Oklahoma City.

The 6ft 2in former Eastern Michigan University football player would often give them an ultimatum – sex or jail.

A 17-year-old girl told how he raped her on her mother’s enclosed porch.

A 23-year-old woman told the court he assaulted her while she was handcuffed to a hospital bed, telling her to stay still so that her heart monitor would not activate.”

“New York, NY — In the last few years, smartphones have become cheaper and more plentiful. According to recent statistics, the number of cellphones in the hands of Americans has been rising steadily every year. It is estimated that 182.6 million Americans will own a smartphone in 2015, an increase from 163.9 million in the previous year.

182 million smartphones means that nearly every adult in the country has a camera in their pocket.

Since the increase in smartphones, there has also been an increase in police brutality videos. This increase in videos led to the question of whether brutality is on the rise or merely that the frequency of filming the instances has risen.

While the answer to this question is up for debate, one thing is certain — the number of police brutality allegations being substantiated by video has increased.

New York’s Civilian Complaint Review Board is an independent agency that is empowered to receive, investigate, mediate, hear, make findings, and recommend action on complaints against New York City police officers. According to the CCRB, nearly half (45%) of all claims of brutality and excessive force of NYPD cops have been substantiated by video in the first six months of 2015.

This increase is an 11% jump from 2014 alone.

According to the agency, surveillance and cellphone videos have also helped substantiate 21% of the overall complaints filed with the CCRB so far this year — the highest rate since the agency’s creation in 1993.

“Video is a fundamental revolution when it comes to the accountability of police officers,” CCRB Chairman Richard Emery told the Daily News. “It’s demystifying the whole investigative process. No longer is the lion’s share of the cases ‘he said, she said’ where additional corroboration is almost always required and substantiation is quite difficult.”

The power of the public watching a police officer commit a crime is proving to be quite the thorn in the side of bad cops, but it still has its limitations.”
