8 more Obamacare co-ops to fail

“Eight of the 11 remaining Obamacare health insurance co-ops appear likely to fail this year, according to an analysis of financial documents obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Twelve of the original 23 federally-financed co-ops have already collapsed. The co-op program was funded with $2.5 billion in 2010.

“In general, there’s not a turnaround in sight. The same problems that plagued them before are continuing,” Thomas P. Miller, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute who previously served as the senior health economist for the congressional Joint Economic Committee, told TheDCNF.

Obamacare advocates hoped the tax-funded non-profit co-ops would successfully compete with for-profit commercial insurance companies and drive down healthcare costs and eventually become permanent fixtures in the marketplace.

State insurance regulators are already liquidating in the 12 states where the co-ops already have closed their doors.

In some states like New York, hospitals and doctors are facing hundreds of millions in losses that will not be covered by the assets of the failed co-op, Health Republic of New York.”

“Here’s an interesting factoid about contemporary policing: In 2014, for the first time ever, law enforcement officers took more property from American citizens than burglars did. Martin Armstrong pointed this out at his blog, Armstrong Economics, last week.

Officers can take cash and property from people without convicting or even charging them with a crime — yes, really! — through the highly controversial practice known as civil asset forfeiture. Last year, according to the Institute for Justice, the Treasury and Justice departments deposited more than $5 billion into their respective asset forfeiture funds. That same year, the FBI reports that burglary losses topped out at $3.5 billion.

Armstrong claims that “the police are now taking more assets than the criminals,” but this isn’t exactly right: The FBI also tracks property losses from larceny and theft, in addition to plain ol’ burglary. If you add up all the property stolen in 2014, from burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and other means, you arrive at roughly $12.3 billion, according to the FBI. Raleigh, N.C. — Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman is dismissing 104 cases of driving while impaired, and an additional 71 traffic-related offenses after a judge found that a Wake sheriff’s deputy lied on the stand.

Last week, District Court Judge Jacqueline Brewer disqualified Deputy Robert Davis as a witness after determining that he had lied in at least three cases. Freeman then dismissed other cases in which he was a witness.

“He violated the defendants’ rights,” Freeman said. “He was untruthful on the stand.”

In seeking to get her charge dismissed, a woman whom Davis arrested in August 2014 made the case that he had not allowed her to make her phone call or to take a breathalyzer test. At a hearing on that woman’s case, Davis denied her claims.

“Deputy Davis’ testimony at the hearing on this matter … was false,” Brewer wrote.

“Deputy Davis has shown a pattern of providing false statements and false testimony,” she added.

Bill Finn represents the woman whose case started the investigation into Davis’ conduct. He said Davis did not allow his client to call a witness into the breathalyzer room, and then lied about it in court. The lie was discovered because there was video of the encounter.

“(Davis) made statements under oath at two different hearings that were false,” Finn said. “You’ve got to have faith in the system, that people are down here making correct statements and they are telling the truth.”

Wake Sheriff Donnie Harrison said Davis, who had served 18 years with the sheriff’s office, was fired after the information came to light.”

“The federal probe into the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office could reopen hundreds of criminal cases and already has led to the dismissal of one narcotics case, according to the Iberia Parish District Attorney’s Office.

Sheriff Louis Ackal and Lt. Col. Gerald Savoy were indicted last week on conspiracy against rights and depravation of rights charges. Eight former deputies — five narcotics officers, two jail supervisors and a K-9 officer — pleaded guilty over the last few weeks to similar civil rights violations.

The DA mailed 170 letters earlier this month notifying criminal defense attorneys who’ve handled cases involving the first six deputies who pleaded guilty. Hundreds more letters are expected to be mailed addressing the remaining guilty pleas and Ackal and Savoy’s indictments.

The DA’s office has identified all of the attorneys who represented defendants since Ackal took office in 2008, said Iberia Parish District Attorney Bo Duhe.

Duhe says the letters are being mailed “out of an abundance of caution.” It will be up to the defense attorneys to file motions in their cases, but the DA’s office is also reviewing all opened and closed narcotics cases.

“You’re talking about a substantial number of cases that are going to be negatively impacted,” First Assistant District Attorney Rob Vines said. “We’re also going back and looking at closed cases to look at how this information may have impacted our charging decisions and the sanctity of the convictions.”

Duhe expects the letters will mostly affect defendants who went to trial and one of the officers testified against them, or entered a “best interest” plea, perhaps because they thought a jury would convict them because of an officer’s testimony.

“Particularly those officers who admitted they were untruthful in giving their testimony in civil cases, all their testimony are seriously in doubt,” Duhe said.”

It was a fish and wildlife charge initially and a second degree misdemeanor

They changed it to a State of Florida charge and made it a first degree misdemeanor

Up to 1 year in jail instead of 30 day Max.

Then the new charging officer changed his testimony that he had given earlier

He now said that all 3 of them refused to exit the vehicle for 3 minutes when ordered to do so

Even though the transcript of his earlier testimony said that they exited without hesitation

Matthew Bondi, 22, of Deerfield Beach, was arrested in August in Davie when authorities said he tried to meet an underage teenage boy for sex.

Bondi pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of receiving a video 15-year-old masturbating.

“I sincerely apologize,” Bondi told the judge Monday. “I understand what I did and I have from day one.”

Bondi was just eight months into what he hoped would be lifetime career in law enforcement when he was arrested. He said he has already begun to try to make “a complete and utter difference in my life.”

Authorities consider charging Trump with inciting violence

Authorities in North Carolina are considering whether to press charges against GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump after a protester was assaulted during one of his rallies in Fayetteville, according to WRAL.com.

The Cumberland County sheriff’s office, while conducting an investigation into the sucker-punch and alleged threats against the protester, went over the speech that Trump gave during the rally “with a fine-tooth comb,” WRAL reporter Gilbert Baez told MSNBC News.

“During their analysis of that speech, there were several instances where Trump made comments that incited the folks to continue the violent acts during that rally,” Baez said.”
