How about we just don’t spend tax payer dollars making bird flu?

‘Been saying this for YEARS. But what do I know. I just have a flock of free-ranging chickens in a bird flu “hot spot” that somehow never seem to catch the virus that’s spread by the wild birds that OVERRUN my property…

Nah. Salatin is a huckster who’s out of his depth on this one. HPAI will have a mortality rate of 98-100%; there won’t be ‘survivors’; and, when we’re talking about commercial broilers or laying hens… they are not breeding stock. So… even if you could ‘breed innate resistance’ (it doesn’t work with HPAI in poultry – it’s been tried), there’s not a genebank in those populations to work from.
Now as to depopulation of affected flocks… that’s driven, to a significant degree, by international trade agreements. If you have a confirmed HPAI outbreak anywhere in a state, ALL poultry products(eggs, broilers, spent layers, chicken feet, etc.) from that entire state are embargoed and cannot cross state lines until the outbreak is deemed to have been controlled. Depopulation just compresses the inevitable near-100% mortality rate to 24 hrs, rather than lingering over 3-5 days.
