Well, I started on a school bus after watching Dad on his 1960 Ford F100. That was back in the day when hid the keys in the ashtray and didn’t have a neutral safety switch. It looked easy as hell, but all I managed to do was drive it through the fence and down into a ditch. That was my informal training before I tried to graduate to Diesel locomotives…..

And speaking of VW…. A buddy of mine had a 1969 (This was about 1978) that was as souped as it could possibly be. Cragar mags with 60s in the back, slap shifter and frosted windows,,, More fun than you could shake a stick at

Saw what looked like college guys on hwy 1 in Baja. Flat tire, no spare. Balanced their ride by putting one of the guys on that end of the bumper. Ahhh yute. They were moving about 50mph.
Ever hear, “Yah, anyone can work on a bug.”? Yah, but no one ever gets them running right again. Starters, for instance. My by-pass was button in the backseat, just below a passenger’s calf.

My buddy had the spare tire powering the windshield washer. I don’t know if that was standard, after market or what. Use it too much and you would run the air out of the spare

Yeah VW, “fast-back”. Left it dead on the highway.

Knew someone years and years ago that bought a VW 411 wagon. They finally torched it after multiple trips to the parts installer.
