Firefighter crashes fire engine, admits to drinking 18 beers before shift

PETERSBURG, Va. (WWBT/Gray News) – A Virginia firefighter is on administrative leave following a crash involving a fire engine he was driving and a parked car.

The reported collision occurred Tuesday afternoon when a fire engine being driven by 34-year-old Petersburg firefighter Aaron Michael Hinspater crashed into a parked car near the intersection of Sycamore and Bank Streets.

According to court documents, 34-year-old Aaron Michael Hinspater was given a test for alcohol content in his system following the crash, and it came back .145, nearly double the .08 legal level.

Authorities reported the Petersburg firefighter admitted to drinking 18 beers prior to his shift that day.

WWBT reports that a witness who works nearby said they saw Hinspater getting a sobriety test after the collision.

“He was struggling through it,” the man said. “They were doing the same thing over and over again because he couldn’t pass the first thing.”

According to police, no one was in the parked car, and no injuries were reported.

Authorities said Hinspater is facing a charge of driving while intoxicated.

  1. ONLY .145 after 18 beers? He spent WAY TOO MUCH money on worthless beers then. I prefer a beer in the 8-13% range myself. Lots of flavor, lots of character, and you don’t need many to get more than a buzz.
