Straight is correct. One good corner and that lumber becomes kindling. She could have just used the roof rack, with overhang on both ends, like carrying a canoe on the roof. A few wraps of duct tape on the end of each lumber bundle would have prevented them from flexing, tie a red flag on the back, and ta da, job done right.

Could have tied them together in the centre of the rack and let the trailer end free pivot. Got to be careful with corner radii and gradient changes of course.
