Back in Christmas ‘67, I got a battery-powered BAR that took 2 D-cejjs in the box magazine, and shot spaeks from the muzzle and made a suitable ‘rat-a-tat’ noise. Strewth, I staged plenty of ambushes on unsuspecting Jap patrols and German Kubelwagens.
One day I couldn’t find it anywhere, finally my mum said that as I hadn’t played with it for a fortnight, she gave it away. Gave It Away!! My 8yo heart was broken, mothers just don’t understand how a man feels, not to have a light machinegun to stitch up enemy traffic with.
Poor mum, she only earned 50 cents an hour, and so couldn’t afford to keep buying me fresh batteries. I wonder what that BAR would fetch from a toy collector now? It was quite well made, this being 1960s Australia.
