    When mounting a tire to wheel, compressed air is usually used to “seat” the bead (where tire physically contacts the wheel). This requires special equipment.
    An alternative, and as the video shows, very dangerous method is to spray a highly flammable aerosol, usually ether, into the tire then ignited. Most definitely NOT OSHA approved.
    Have seen this done and have done it myself several times.
    Extreme caution must be used when doing this…in fact… DON’T DO IT!
    Use too little ether and nothing happens, use a little too much, you get a firey BOOM that can be quite lethal to those nearby.

  3. On looking closer at the video, the wheel is a 2 piece wheel, which is a whole different animal altogether. The 2nd piece of these wheels is basically a great big lock washer that is the diameter of the wheel (weighs about 15-20 pounds). Mounting these is dangerous on their own if not done properly. Adding ether to the mix was just stupid.

  4. I’m more inclined that the tyre was punctured but they couldn’t break the bead seal to get the tyre off.
    Some old school cranes in England (eg Coles Cranes) used to have a 4 large truck tyres but either side of each tyre was a steel disc only slightly smaller than the tyre, this allowed the crane to move around a hard site on the tyre but soon as you lifted something heavy the steel discs came into play.
    When a tyre needing replacement the only way (safely) to break the bead seal was to put a chain around the both discs and pull it apart with a heavy crawler or truck, not an option here.

    When miles from the nearest service station – tried and true ways, work.
    Either that or the work stops.

  7. That looked like they were Heating the Lockring to Expand it, and the guy with the Hammer knocked it loose. Gas was getting into the Tire, or more likely, they sprayed some in it before they lit the Torch.
    My experience with Tires that size is on Big Jets- Wheels are true 2-Piece with Tie Bolts, because the Rim Edges are so High, and the Tire Beads so thick there’s No Chance of Prying the Tire off the Rim like with Cars. If you don’t have a Hydraulic-Jaw Bead Breaker, you let the Nitrogen out of the Tire, and hook up a Vacuum Pump to the Valve Stem. it takes a while, but eventually the Atmospheric Pressure mashes the Sidewalls in enough to Break them loose.
    And you don’t use an “Inflation Cage” to fill them- because with up to 210 PSI of Nitrogen, a Tire that Explodes just turns that Cage into More Shrapnel.

  8. MANY YEARS AGO IN THE 70S A GUY IN SOUTH AFRICA WILLIE ELSE WAS CAUGHT ON THE MINES USING DETONATORS TO BLOW OF THE WEELS OF THE BOGIES HE WAS FIRED BUT WHEN PRODUCTION SUDDENLY FELL THEY GOT HIM BACK TO DEMONSTRATE HIS TRICK THAT IS STANDARD PROCEDURE NOW ALL OVER THE WORLD
