This comment is sort of apropos because it’s about birds.
Went outside yesterday morning and saw the remains of what looked to be a pigeon on the ground about 15 feet from the door next to the trunk of a fifty+ year old oak tree. The only parts in evidence were the flight feather ends of the wings. Everything else was gone, I assume eaten.
There’s been a peregrine falcon hanging around the neighborhood most of this winter. A week or so ago I saw it knock down a small songbird in the same general area.
The tie in is peregrines are colloquially known as duck hawks around these parts. I’ve always wondered how a peregrine would be able to fly off with a duck because mallards, at least, are roughly the same size. There’s a good supply of flying rats (pigeons) at a strip mall about a quarter mile from where I live. Hopefully, by winter’s end, most of the pigeons will be eaten.

Update. I went out to collect the remains in the afternoon yesterday. Turns it wasn’t a pigeon, but a morning dove. There was also quite a bit of it left on closer inspection. The head and tail were ripped off as well as the wings, no guts, all eaten I suspect, and about 1/8 on the breasts eaten.

That is trademark. I raised a screech owl for a year and he and his progeny come to our yard. Rabbit, bird, all the same “Empty” profile
